Hemoperfusion
Choosing Dialysis: Which type is right?
Hemoperfusion therapy is a blood purification technique that removes toxins and other molecules from the blood. It’s also known as hemadsorption.
How it works
- Blood is withdrawn from a vein and anticoagulated
- The blood passes through a device that contains adsorbent particles
- The adsorbent particles bind to and remove toxins and other molecules from the blood
- The blood is returned to the patient
What it’s used for
- Poisoning: Hemoperfusion can remove toxins from the blood in cases of poisoning
- Sepsis: Hemoperfusion can remove cytokines from the blood in patients with sepsis
- Chronic liver disease: Hemoperfusion can be used to treat chronic liver disease
- Renal disease: Hemoperfusion can be used to treat renal disease
- COVID-19: Hemoperfusion has been used as a supportive therapy for patients with severe COVID-19
